TLC Minerals is excited to be signing Canadian singer/songwriter Michelle Carter-Leis as a spokes person.

In spring of 2009, Canadian singer/songwriter Michelle Carter-Leis caught the attention of independent record label Realize Records. Several calls and emails later, the label signed Carter-Leis to a four option deal. Michelle knew this would be the start of a new chapter in her career that began many years ago.

Carter-Leis had always had an extremely clear idea that she would be an entertainer. While being dropped off at kindergarten for the first time Michelle felt her time could be better spent pursuing her profession. Carter-Leis states, “When my mom dropped me off at kindergarten I told her that she was holding me back from my singing career!” While in the third grade, influenced by her mother’s musical theatre experience and annoyed by silent reading, Michelle suggested to her teacher that the class do a performance rather than silent reading. He agreed and Michelle made her directorial debut in the classroom. It was that type of drive and vision that has carried her career through the ups and downs from the solace of growing up in Kamloops, British Columbia to moving immediately to Vancouver after graduation to pursue her passion.

Michelle began performing at festivals while studying classical voice as a teenager and went on to attend the music program at Douglas College. She also studied privately at the University of British Columbia with renowned opera teacher David Meek. Carter-Leis had the distinction of being selected to attend the Banff Center for the Arts for voice intensive study with Richard Armstrong before deciding to take a different direction in her career.

Prior to an important audition, Michelle made the biggest career decision to date; she quit opera and dedicated herself to write her own music. “It was a hard decision. Opera has a very structured system and writing your own music is much less structured. I had been completely immersed in the classical and opera mindset for eight years so it was certainly a period of adjustment.”

After a brief stint in Toronto, ever resilient, she moved back to Vancouver and became part of the house/ambient ensemble that became Mercury Sound Cartel. Michelle sang and wrote for the band for the next six years.
Michelle went on to perform and/or record with such talents as Lukas Rossi (Rockstar Supernova), Norwood Fisher (Fishbone), Tyler Connolly (Theory of a Deadman), Alan Wong-Moon (Moon Pad), Dave Thompson (Digital Underdog) and Christine Connolly (Chrissy Danielle). Her voice has been heard on the entire first season of the hit show "The L Word" with Mercury Sound Cartel, as well as on Sony Music (Media Software) "Pocket Diva Acid Loop Pack". Her song "Wake Her Up" was added to the ‘Sounds Like Cafe Vol. 10 Compilation CD` in Australia, accompanying such great acts as Beth Orton and Grammy nominee Corinne Bailey Rae.

Carter-Leis and writing partner singer/songwriter Christine Connolly (co-writer of Theory Of A Deadman`s two #1 hits "Bad Girlfriend" and “I Hate My Life”) are hard at work in Los Angeles working on new songs for the new recording. Michelle, presently in pre-production with producer Paul Lewis, is splitting her time between Canada, Los Angeles and Philadelphia. The label plans for a 2010 release followed by an international tour.

With her piles of blonde hair, sparkling grey blue eyes, and a sound that pushes the borders of pop music, Michelle is a force to be reckoned with and will have a career to aspire to for years to come. The uncaged bird is ready to sing.

What’s the difference between regular foundation and this mineral kind I’ve been hearing about?
Maryanne, Calgary, AB

Expert Answer:
“Mineral makeup is generally made up of finely ground natural minerals — smaller particles than what you’d find in regular makeup,” . “The result is a sheerer, natural-looking finish — similar to a picture that has been retouched.” Creating flawless skin has always been a daunting task, but mineral makeup can now help ease the anxiety. “Women don’t have to work as hard. The pigments are so light that it’s easy to build up more coverage if you need it.”

Some mineral makeup can also give off an attractive, iridescent glow — but watch out for those with shimmery finishes. “They can leave you looking shiny and glittery. The appeal of mineral makeup is that it allows you to still see through to your skin,” .

PRO TIP: If you have oily skin, don’t use mineral powder foundation to absorb excess sebum. Although mineral powder foundation leaves a natural-looking finish, it still is foundation and your skin could look too heavily made-up. Instead, use a translucent powder to help tone down any shine.

Purchasing Mineral Makeup - The Basics

Expect to buy at least two items. At a minimum, you need foundation and an application brush. For optimum results you can buy two more items: An oat powder, for oil control and to set your makeup for all day or night wear, and a large dusting brush to apply it. (A good dusting brush is versatile and handy for applying bronzer and blush as well.)

Find the right shade. In the past, the 'look' was to find a foundation that provide color to an otherwise pale face. This is a fashion don't, and went out with the 70's Coppertone look! If you are still hanging on foundation to give you color, trust me (because you're friends don't want to tell you), you look like you're wearing a mask!

What you want to find is a foundation that perfectly matches your skin, and this applies for any foundation, non-mineral and liquid included. Here's how you find it: Take a shade that looks about right for you, and with a Q-Tip, dab a stripe onto your jaw line, blending it in. Keep doing this with different shades in a different spot near the jaw line, until you find the one that disappears into the skin. This is your perfect foundation shade for the current season.

(You add color and dimension in other ways, which we'll cover in Part II.)

Use the right tools for the job. Invest in a kabuki brush, a dense, natural hair brush made specifically for applying loose mineral foundation. There are different sizes and shapes for different levels of coverage and finish. A small, dense kabuki brush will be your most versatile applicator, giving you the most coverage and the buffing power you need to smooth and blend the foundation. A short, flat kabuki will give you medium coverage and still some buffing power, and a larger, less dense kabuki will give you even lighter coverage but with less buffing power.

That's it! Once you have the right shade and the right tool, you are ready for flawless application.

Hello to all and Happy Fall !

I wanted to share some goodies with you about a few fun things and some good news as well !

First I am proud to announce that TLC Mineral make-up is now available for purchase at
"Pure light Laser Clinic" #606-777 West Broadway in Vancouver. I am working at finding
more locations as well to make-it easier for everyone to find their favourite mineral make-up!

I also wanted to share a fun new product I was introduced to called "I Love My Lashes"
this is a great new do it yourself lash extension kit that was developed by Kandace Lowen a make-up artist and hair designer that has worked on many movie stars during her career!

These lashes are separated into “flares” - separate clusters of lashes rather than an individual lash. The flare lashes are fast and easy and can last up to 15 days, if properly cared for at home.

Eyelash Extensions Kits can be a special gift for a friend . Is there a Wedding coming soon for you or a relative? Need a Wedding Shower gift or Bridal Shower gift - Eyelash Extension Party, or maybe a Bachelorette Party!

Semi permanent Lash Extensions are great for special events and vacation too.

This easy, do it yourself, semi permanent, eye lash extensions kit has been put together for you, your friends and relatives so you too can have the... Hollywood Look of Lashes, I highly suggest you go to the web site and have a look at this great new idea !!!

And finally I wanted to share some fall make-up trends to keep you all fresh and up to date while playing with your mineral make-up !

September: The colourful smoky eye

Though kids return to school and pictures of leaves dot the calendar, in most states, September is still warm. If people paid attention only to the temperature and not to the calendar, everyone would dress in September just as they do in August.

But many admit to eagerly awaiting trying out their fall clothes and makeup. A way to jump right in – but still look appropriate for warm days – is to try a “smoky eye” but not use gray or black eye shadow. Instead, choose a shade such as green, blue, purple or taupe (depending on your skin tone and the situation.)

The look is in-between summer and fall, fun and sophisticated at the same time. If the color seems too bright or heavy, dip an eye shadow brush in white or pale pink powder and cover the color slightly to tone down.

October: 1960s-inspired makeup

Magazines and catalogs have been showing 1960s-inspired clothes and makeup for fall. Key mod looks are heavy eyes and pale lips, but since this is 2008, a little updating is key.

Line eyes with semi-dark pencil, but be sure to follow with shadow in the same color and blend until the look is on the softer side. Curl lashes before applying mascara to ensure that lashes appear lush. It’s difficult to pull off pale lips – admit it, it’s a little odd… does any woman really want her lips to disappear?

Update this by finding a shade of lipstick that is close to your natural lip color. This way you’re enhancing your lips without neutralizing them.

November: Matte

Fall runway models showed off total matte faces, including skin.
It’s a bit much for day-to-day wear, but the best way to imitate this runway look for everyday is to keep skin as clean and non-oily as possible.

This can be accomplished by maintaining a skin regime that works for your skin type and, if you have combination or oily skin, being sure that you zap excess oil with whatever works best for you – such as toner or blotter sheets.

Use powder eye shadow, not cream (and put a base under your shadow if necessary.) Lip gloss is usually very shiny, so choose a lipstick instead.

December: Metallic's

Yes, this contradicts last month’s testimony regarding the trend of matte makeup.
But do you really think December will come and go without a return to metallic makeup?
After all, metallics have been popular for ages.

What an ideal month to really experiment with them – holiday gatherings, parties and outdoor events are in need of a little shine. First decide which type of metallic you prefer. Does your skin look better next to silver or gold?

There are also color-metallics, though they usually have a base undertone of silver or gold. Powder eye shadow gives a shimmery or glittery look, while cream eye shadow is often obaque and intense (unless it’s a very sheer formula). Cheek glaze can also be metallic, and looks best if your eyes aren’t too shiny.

Lipstick can be available in metal-inspired hues, but be warned that, even at a party, metallic lipstick often has a bit of a junior-high connotation.

Best bet: keep the shimmer in the eyes or cheeks.

Tana Lynn's Anti-Aging Make-up Tricks

Moisturize religiously
Applying a moisturizer every morning makes your skin look fresher even without make up, and it helps foundation glide on smoothly when you do !

Use concealer wisely.
Look for a color one shade lighter than your natural skin tone, remember less is more !. Dab a little over the lip line, too; it's a needle-free filler for fine lines around the mouth and keeps color from bleeding.

Blur the edges.
As we age, perfectly drawn eyeliner starts looking more dour than dramatic. Rimming your lids with an eye pencil will define the eyes and seem to plump lashes, but always smudge the line a bit afterward for a more flattering, soft-focus effect. And while a lip liner is a great tool for shaping the mouth, use the liner to fill in the whole lip so there isn't a hard edge.

Go light on lipcolor.
Dark colors can look harsh and accentuate age spots and other imperfections. A lip gloss—not too shiny—looks much fresher

Take care and have fun with your make-up !

FALL MAKE-UP TRENDS

 Willow  Shadow

Why You'll Love It: The shade's sandy base is warm; its shimmer, cool as steel. The combination is soft and wearable. A light dusting of powder  over your lids, plus a highlight in the inner corners of your eyes, illuminates your whole face. "This color looks beautiful worn alone or as an accent, and looks especially beautiful on darker skin tones,".

Chocolate Brown Lips

Why You'll Love It: The textures and finishes of fall's brown lipsticks & glosses are as rich and varied as a box of truffles. This is great because while one day you may be partial to a sheer, slightly shimmering milk chocolate, the next you may have a taste for matte cocoa with a copper tinge. "Skip lip liner to keep the look soft" . Then warm up your complexion with pale pink blush.

Shimmering Pink Blush

Why You'll Love It: Even when you're wearing nothing else on your face, a pink gleam so slight you'll notice it only when the light hits your skin makes you look fresh and resplendent. Wear these blushes any way you please, high on the cheekbone or on the apples of your cheeks. "This very light pink is a safe shade that looks great on every woman and works with almost every eye and lip color" . The beauty of these textures is that the shimmer is fairy-dust subtle.

Have fun with your mineral make-up, remember that with the loose minerals you can custom blend any shades you like!

Take care and keep watching for more news and updates!
